Madhvani-MISA Delivering Energy
Delivering clean energy to the UK
Madhvani International Ltd. the UK affiliate of Madhvani International, S.A. is the lead investor and sponsor of Project Quasar aiming to establish the UKs first commercial c.1GWe SMR power generation project. As an IPP we are committed to deliver clean, affordable, stable, safe and sustainable base-load power to the UK’s power networks
Pioneering power generation
A major success for MISA was the inception and development, in 1993, of the 250MW Bujagali Falls HPP on the river Nile. This was Africa’s first private major hydro-power project which MISA initiated and then partnered with AES Corporation of Arlington Va. In 2001/2 at financial closure, the Nile Independent Power/AES Nile Power project was re-structured and handed over to the Ugandan Government, with pioneering and innovative construction and private financing arrangements for the planned investment of more US$640 million arranged by AES and MISA.
Project development
MISA is developing an integrated investment for generation, transmission, distribution and last-mile connectivity in SE Uganda for 100MW biomass/solar hybrid generation to connect more 200,000 households to the national grid network. As early as in 1979/80, MISA pioneered the establishment Central Africa’s first bio-fuels plant in Kenya
Madhvani-MISA dynamic
Madhvani International, S.A. (MISA)was set up in 1979 to manage the Uganda assets of the Madhvani Family that were expropriated by Idi Amin. These assets the Madhvani Group of Companies – were recovered with at MISA’ initiative. They are once again rehabilitated and expanded to become important national assets in industry, energy, agriculture and agro-processing.The Madhvani Group currently employs over 10,000 employees in Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya and India.
Biomass success
In 2018, the Madhvani Group commissioned Africa’s largest co-generation project with a 50MWe biomass generation plant at the Kakira sugar complex in Jinja, eastern Uganda with an investment of more than $75 million
MISA offers global access to electricity with Project Quasar
With Project Quasar, MISA will showcase the immensepotential that the advent of SMR/AMR technology opens for power generation for investors, developers and Governments worldwide to establish small, affordable and clean power generation projects. SMR/AMR technology provides a long-term sustainable supply of clean, reliable and base-load electricity to power sectors. In Africa and India, where MISA is developing some of these opportunities and, where more than 1 Billion people have no access to electricity, this represents opportunities to generate more than 200GWe, with amarket for investment that is valued at more than £1Tn.
